Program Abstract:

The library and information science [LIS] profession needs skilled, dedicated professionals. LIS programs nationwide and in Texas avidly search for enough students to fill their classes. Texas AHEAD Accessibility Officers to the rescue! Learn about the new Texas Century Scholarship Diversity Initiative. Guide our students into exciting careers principled by equity of access and accessibility.

Summary:

The library and information science [LIS] profession needs skilled, dedicated professionals. Library and information science programs nationwide and specifically in Texas avidly search for enough students to fill their classes. At any given time, the list of job openings on the Texas Library Association job line usually numbers as many as 90 positions. And this job line only includes professional level positions.

Texas AHEAD Accessibility Officers, our students, and the American and Texas Library Associations' Century Scholarship Diversity Initiatives to the rescue.

In June 1999, the American Library Association's [ALA's] ASCLA [Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies] Division established the independently-funded up-to-$2500 ALA ASCLA Century Scholarship Diversity Initiative ( http://www.ala.org/ascla/centuryscholarship.html) to recruit people who do things differently, the students we serve in our Accessibility Offices, into library and information science [LIS] careers and to help fulfill ALA's mission to bring needed diversity to the profession.

The ALA ASCLA Century Scholarship now boasts two Century Scholars: Rebecca Van Scyoc (2000), a graduate LIS student at the University of Illinois, and Simon Healey (2001), graduating this coming December with a Master's of Library Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh. We now are seeking applicants for the 2002 ALA ASCLA Scholarship. Deadline: March 1, 2002 and would very much appreciate your assistance in recruiting potential Texas Century Scholars.

Established in February 2001, Texas Library Association's [TLA's] companion Texas Century Scholarship (http://www.txla.org/html/awards/scholar/century.html) makes Texas a leader in promoting ALA Century's diversity initiative and creating new professional opportunities for our students.

To be eligible for the $2000 matching Texas Century Scholarship, one must win the ALA ASCLA Century Scholarship, attend one of the three ALA-accredited LIS programs in Texas (Texas Woman's University, University of North Texas, or University of Texas at Austin), and agree to work in a Texas library or information center for two years upon graduation. Let us have a Texas Century Scholar!

Texas AHEAD members and colleagues can play a vital role in expanding the Texas Century Scholarship to include a to-be -submitted (by February 1, 2002) grant proposal to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (http://www.imls.gov/) or for a Demco, Inc./Texas Library Association Grant to recruit 50 students who do things differently in Texas academic institutions, the students whom our Accessibility Offices serve, into actual, though perhaps not professional, positions in libraries and information centers across the State of Texas. The 50 selected participants will be mentored to pursue professional LIS degrees at Texas universities, The grant, if approved, will help provide accessibility training and awareness to the Texas libraries and information centers, fund a portion of the selected participants' salaries, and provide needed assistive technology.

Of course, a key element in this grant process is the identification of the 50 participants. The assistance of the Texas AHEAD community is kindly requested in identifying and recruiting the 50 individuals in the Texas Century Scholarship Initiative.

Join together in a roundtable discussion to create job opportunities for our students in the new millennium.
